New Hampshire news conference today: Andy Martin makes bid to lead Republican Party of New Hampshire

Andy Martin, America’s leading independent conservative columnist and Internet Powerhouse, will hold a telephone news conference today, Monday, January 7th to announce he has become a candidate to lead the Republican Party of New Hampshire. Andy says “the same New England that started a War of Independence in 1776 must start a new war of independence from the national Republican Party in 2013.” In launching his candidacy Andy is critical of the New Hampshire Republican Party’s “establishment” choice for state chairman, Jennifer Horn. “She is the Democrats’ dream come true,” Andy says. “Republicans have lost 8 of the last 9 gubernatorial elections,” Andy chides. “And the party’s ‘establishment’ is trying hard to make it 9 losses out of 10 in 2014. I have the experience to lead Republicans to victory. Victory.”

(MANCHESTER, NH) (January 7, 2013) New Hampshire Republican activist and Conservative blogger Andy Martin will hold a telephone news conference today, January 7th to announce he will be a candidate for state chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party at the Party’s annual meeting on January 26th. Andy will be challenging Jennifer Horn and Andrew Hemingway.

“With all due respect to the party’s ‘establishment,’” Andy says. “party leaders must have a ‘death wish’ if they think Jennifer Horn can lead the party to victory in 2014. Ms. Horn does not have either the qualifications or the temperament to rebuild our losing team. Ms. Horn is a ‘dream chairman’ for New Hampshire Democrats.

“Horn comes out of the strident wing of the party. This is the wing of the party that has led New Hampshire Republicans to defeat in 8 of the last 9 gubernatorial elections. You would think after 8 out of 9 losses people would rethink their strategy. But no, in 2014 party leaders want to make it 9 losses out of 10 tries by choosing Horn to lead them into battle with the Democrats.

“In business, if an organization lost 8 out of 9 quarters, the management would be fired. But the old management would not choose the new leaders.

“We need new ideas and a new strategy.

“All across the United States, state parties are looking at ‘what went wrong’ and how to ‘make it right’ in the future (see link below). I have been on a two-week vacation with family and friends and I have had lot of time to sit down and think.

“There is no way the Republican Party of New Hampshire can be considered a viable political organization if it cannot win a fair share of gubernatorial elections. Eight out of nine losses does not present a viable opposition.

“I am obviously a controversial choice for chairman, but I am the only choice if Republicans want to win in 2014. We need to do more than upgrade our computer systems, although they need upgrading. We need to accept that, going forward, ‘The Chicago Way’ has radically changed state and national politics. Obama has imposed the ‘permanent campaign’ on Americans. That is the Chicago Way: total politics all the time. Total arrogance. Total corruption and total victory. Not since the legendary El Cid has a leader as moribund as Obama won a victory. But Obama won, we lost.

“There is probably no more decent man in politics than Ovide Lamontagne. But as a 1996 Republican gubernatorial candidate Lamontagne jump-started Democrat Jeanne Shaheen’s career. In an extraordinary coincidence, Lamontagne won the same nomination sixteen years later and lost using the same strategy and being attacked for the same weaknesses as he had been in 1996. Nothing had changed. If the Republican Party learned nothing in sixteen years of trying, then we need a new broom to sweep clean.

“Significantly, Lamontagne had the universal support of the party’s ‘establishment,’ the same ‘establishment’ that is now promoting Jennifer Horn for state chairman.

“Ms. Horn and I have had our differences in the past but I am emphatically not running merely to attack her although I believe she is a completely unqualified candidate for state chairman. I am running because in the next few days I will offer positive alternatives, a positive program and a positive approach to rebuilding the party.

“Jack Kimball and I have also had our differences in the past. Surprisingly, I will do everything I can to work with Jack Kimball and to see that the people who voted for Kimball in 2011 feel completely welcome and part of my team in 2013. Mr. Kimball and I had personal differences. We did not have doctrinal differences. I believe one of the priorities of a new leadership team must be to work hard to integrate Tea Party enthusiasts in the overall organization.

“Since it arose in 2010, the Tea Party has been relentlessly vilified by the liberal media and Obama’s political posse. I now something about being unfairly vilified by the media and Obama’s henchmen. I will find a way to incorporate Tea Party concerns and Tea Party supporters in our overall plan of attack. My approach is essential if Republicans are to rebuild. We need a broadly-based Republican coalition, not a narrowly-targeted party leadership controlled by a social conservative.

“Over the past decade the Republican Party has become increasingly dictatorial. The dictatorial approach culminated in the embarrassing 2012 election that Mitt Romney should have won.

“The national party has dictated to New England, New York, California and, increasingly, even Florida. New Hampshire is not Utah, and New Hampshire is not Wyoming. New Hampshire is part of New England, and New England takes it own individualistic and independent approach to many national issues. Heck, these people started a revolution in 1776. Unfortunately, the national party has locked New England Republicans in an ideological ‘straightjacket.’ That rigid national conformity has had disastrous electoral consequences locally.

“My late Greek-American Uncle, Republican William Vasiliou, who was a UNH graduate (1932), was elected to local office in Connecticut in a town that was 75% Democratic. He was a public servant. We need to reach out to New Hampshire voters, and listen to them, instead of just dictating our platform to them. We need to make painful adjustments in how we approach public policy and private morality. With all due respect, Ms. Horn has no history of outreach to the ‘other side,’ and her rigid ideology makes her incapable of adjusting party policy to the realities of living and campaigning in New Hampshire.

“If I become state chairman the Republican Party of New Hampshire will be a community service organization. I will ask, ‘How can we be of service?’ not ‘Take it or leave it.’ We will be competitive for every vote in every precinct. As state chairman I will work with Republicans, Independents and, yes, Democrats, in every precinct.

“Ms. Horn, on the other hand, comes out of the extreme right wing of the party. Horn is part of the ‘take it or leave it’ crowd that has devastated New Hampshire and New England Republicans. Republicans are all for ‘states’ rights’ until it comes to issues. Then we lock down the states with a rigid national code of right-wing issues that are out of step with many areas of the country.

“Let me be clear: I am a conservative, not a right-winger. The conservative Republican Party I grew up in was always competitive in New England. New Hampshire Republicans should define for ourselves what it means to be a conservative, and not be dictated to from South Carolina. North Dakota Democrats just snatched a U. S. Senate seat from Republicans. Senator Heidi Heitkamp is now squashing President Obama’s gun control agenda. Now that’s politics.

“In summary, we need more politics and more politicking in the New Hampshire Republican Party, and less ideology. We need a strong, tough leader who will ‘take it to the Democrats’ but not be afraid to tell our own outliers that we are in business to win elections and serve the people, not to propagate and dictate a rigid political ideology to the people of New Hampshire.

“Jennifer Horn is an extremist ideologue; that’s where she comes from, that’s her background. The out-of-state politicians Horn brought to speak in New Hampshire were all outside the mainstream of New Hampshire voters. Making Horn state chairman would be a disaster. If the party’s ‘establishment’ chose Horn, I am here to tell that ‘establishment,’ you’re OUT,” Andy says.

“I have chosen a very unconventional time to hold a news conference by telephone on Monday night, because I am still on vacation until the end of the week. But I choose 7:00 P.M. for a reason. Ordinary working people can join our conference call. My announcement is not just for media types and Party insiders during the day. I want to get working people back involved with the New Hampshire Republican Party. We offer the only hope for escape from Obamaism.”
